Five ways you can make life easier for new Mac users

From TUAW.com

As we close out 2007, there are thousands of new Mac users just beginning to explore the wonderful world found on those shiny computers that were tucked under the tree/menorah/nonsectarian gift deployment venue. If there’s one thing we’d recommend that experienced Mac hands could do to make the adjustment easier… well, there isn’t just one thing, there’s five.

Episode 001 - Connecting to a Windows Machine

As someone who has switched from Windows to Mac, the first question I had for myself was “How do I get my files off of my Windows machine and onto my Mac?”…

In this episode I walk you through that process.

Note: Funny how it is easier for my Mac to connect to my Windows machine then it is for other Windows machines on my home network to connect to it… what’s up with that?

Have a topic suggestion, e-mail me at “atmymac@gmail.com”.

So much stuff, so little time!

Ok, well maybe I jumped into this too soon, at least wanting to do a video podcast. I simply have no time for this right now.

I think for now, I will have to just write about what I’m discovering with my mac with perhaps some screen casts.

My first episode will be what everyone will probably want to do… copy your files from your Windows machine to your new Mac. Hopefully, coming soon.

iMac Has Arrived!

So I picked up my new iMac yesterday after work from my local Apple dealer, MacEast. Thanks for everything Barry!

First impression of the computer… Wow, is this thing big!

I’ve done some filming already, you know the whole un-boxing thing and some initial use. Last night I got it to connect to my Windows box to grab my files. FYI: Appears to be a problem in Finder, I had to make the connection to my Windows machine by typing “smb://computername” into Safari. Once I enter the username and password, the connection was instant. Much better than my Windows machines trying to talk to each other!

So to start getting into this Video blogging thing, I need to find a good screen capture program (hopefully for free) that will allow me to capture video of my screen so I can import it into iMovie. If anyone has any suggestions, please add them to my comments section.

Tonight I’m going to start organizing my files a little more and perhaps set up iTunes.

I hope to have learned enough about iMovie by this weekend to start putting footage together for Episode 1.

Cheers,

P

Welcome!

Welcome to @ My Mac, a new site dedicated to my experiences switching from Windows to Mac.

My plans are to do weekly video podcasts showing my trials and tribulations with the whole Mac experience. I also hope to run a live stream of me working at my Mac.

Today is Sunday and in the past 3 hours I’ve installed WordPress and the theme you are looking at, as well as some minor customizations. I am doing this on a Windows machine because I don’t have a Mac yet… It has been on order and should be ready for pickup tomorrow! I can’t wait.

I decided to get my Mac now mainly because of the new Mac OS, Leopard and iLife 08′. I’ve read the reviews, watched video demos and followed other podcasts to finally decide, now is the time.

Hopefully in a few days I’ll have my first video podcast up (if iMovie is as easy as it looks). Stay tuned…
